I thought he dropped that. It was a big expansive drive from Smith.

It's horrible when you are clutching and grabbing the ball but Jansen finally got it in his hands on the third attempt. It was not a thing of beauty but Smith worked hard for his 66.

'I'd thought he'd dropped that!' - Jansen's juggled catch at slip dismisses Smith

    Hello!

A huge breakthrough from the part-timer Aiden Markram.

What a bowling change from Temba Bavuma. Steve Smith goes for a booming off-drive and gets a thick edge to Marco Jansen at slip, who performs an entertaining juggling act but hangs on at the third or fourth attempt.

I'm sure that'll go down well, Shaf.

Time to rename Lord's: 'The home of Steve Smith'.

Wiaan Mulder's first spell was the best I've seen him bowl in Test cricket.

He's going to have a heavy workload in this Test match, due to batting at number three, but his selection is good for the future of South Africa.

Beau Webster could barely get the ball off the square at the beginning of his knock.

But credit to him, he's fought through it and moves to 33 with a cracking drive for four off the returning Wiaan Mulder.

This fifth wicket partnership is now worth 75.

Four singles are worked off Keshav Maharaj.

Steve Smith looked to be aggressive against the spinner in his first over.

He leapt all over that. Webster screams through extra cover.

Something tells me we're going to be talking about that missed lbw for quite some time.

Beau Webster drills the last ball of the over for four with real confidence.

    Phew.

He's middled it. As you were.

    Another lbw review.

This is very innocuous. I'll eat my shoe if this is out.

  • Aus 129-4published at 37.4 overs

This is frustrating for South Africa.

The post-lunch spell from Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen was unplayable at times, and Beau Webster in particular was all over the place.

But Lungi Ngidi is leaking runs now. He drifts on to Webster's pads and that's an effortless boundary.

As South Africa turn to spin, it's worth noting that Steve Smith averages 64 in Test cricket against the twirlers. 40% of his almost 4,100 runs against spin have come through the mid-wicket and mid-on region (see chart below). And as if to prove a point, that is where Keshav Maharaj is dispatched.

    Anything for the spinners?

Not if you bowl there. Keshav Maharaj gifts a long-hop for Steve Smith to club over mid-wicket for four.

Lungi Ngidi has been poor. It's a bit of a pet hate of mine that he has a sweeper on both sides. He hasn't been able to create any pressure.

He's struggled with any rhythm in this game.

Is this the start of Beau Webster's counter-attack?

It's a good-length delivery from Lungi Ngidi but Webster steps back in his crease, and whacks a straight pull for four.

It's been really high-quality bowling and batting. There's been some class Test match leaves from Australia.
